Cultural Adventures
A journey through Semarang promises a profound connection with its cultural roots and an appreciation for its evolving identity. Begin your exploration at historic landmarks such as Lawang Sewu, a testament to the city’s colonial architecture and intriguing history. The charming streets of Kota Lama reflect a bygone era with their Dutch-era buildings. The lively markets and traditional crafts showcase Semarang’s artisanal heritage, offering a taste of both traditional Javanese dishes and contemporary flavors.

Lawang Sewu
Built between 1904 and 1918, Lawang Sewu, meaning “a thousand doors” in Javanese, does not actually have a thousand doors. Its numerous windows often give that impression. Historically significant, it served as the headquarters for the Dutch East Indies Railway Company until 1942, then as a Japanese military headquarters during World War II. Today, this impressive building features exhibits on Indonesia’s rail transport history and is a major cultural tourist attraction in Semarang.

Sam Poo Kong Temple
Sam Poo Kong, also known as Gedung Batu Temple, is one of the oldest and largest Chinese temples in Semarang. It is a multi-faith site used by Buddhists, Muslims, and people of both Chinese and Javanese backgrounds. Originally built by Admiral Zheng He during his Southeast Asia voyage, the temple was damaged by a landslide in 1704. It has since been rebuilt and now features five temples in a blend of Chinese and Javanese styles. The front yard is often used for festivals and celebrations according to the lunar calendar.

Simpang Lima
Simpang Lima is a square where Semarang’s five main roads converge: Jl. Pahlawan, Jl. Pandanaran, Jl. Ahmad Yani, Jl. Gajah Mada, and Jl. Ahmad Dahlan. Famously known as the center of the city, this landmark is the heart of Semarang. It serves as a venue for various lifestyle activities and is a haven for pedestrians, often used for leisurely pastimes and sports activities. At night, Simpang Lima comes alive with colorful and brightly decorated vehicles called “odong‑odong,” a popular traditional ride for children that can also be enjoyed by adults.
